Ligthning Back to .500 After 13-6 Win Over Squeeze
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- The Leesburg Lightning (9-9) travelled to Lake Minneola High School to take on the Winter Garden Squeeze (4-11) in a make-up game.
Max Law (North Florida) got the Lightning in the scoring column early on with a two-run home run, his second of the season, that made it a 2-0 game in the top of the first.
Leesburg capatilized on a Winter Garden miscue in the second, as Edward Surinach (Embry Riddle) came home to score after the Squeeze catcher tried to nab him stealing at third base and his throw got away. The run pushed the Lightning lead to 3-0.
The Squeeze did not wait long for a response, however. A Brenden Freese (Erskine) RBI single cut the Lightning lead in half and fielder’s choice scored a run to tie the contest at 2-2. In the home half of the third, the Squeeze tied the game, as they scored on a wild pitch. After three, the game was knotted up at 3-3.
Dylan Kelley (South Florida) produced a solid start for the Lightning, allowing only three runs in five innings. Kelly struck out six batters.
That score held until the top of the sixth, when a Sean Mootrey (Georgia Gwinnett) double brought home Cage Cox (Valdosta State) and Tate Mathis (North Alabama). Mootrey later came home to score on a Mike Rocco (Ohio Northern) base hit that gave the Lightning a 6-3 lead after six.
The seventh inning is where this game got crazy. After a Law single, Cox connected for his fourth big fly of the season and extended the Lightning lead to 8-3. After back-to-back RBI walks from Mootrey and Tucker Horsley (North Florida), Leesburg’s lead grew to 10-3. The craziness was not over, as the Lightning added two more on a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Robbie Scott (North Florida) and yet another bases-loaded walk, this time by Law. After a long seventh inning, the Lightning enjoyed a 12-3 lead.
In the top of the ninth, a Scott triple drove in Horsley and gave the Lightning a ten run cushion late in the ball game. The Squeeze tacked on three runs in the home half, but it was not enough.
The Leesburg Lightning won its second straight game, 13-6, and handed the Squeeze a seventh straight defeat.
