The Lightning Pour On The Suns, 14-2
(Leesburg, Fla.)-The Leesburg Lightning got out to an early lead and never looked back on Tuesday night, defeating the DeLand Suns, 14-2
The Bolts got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st off of some defensive miscues by DeLand, allowing 2B Gabe Santiago to score on a passed ball strikeout for 1B James Strom that allowed him to safely make it to first base in time.
The lead for the Lightning would be short lived as the Suns grabbed a run off C Anthony Gonzalez's RBI-single, but Leesburg would be quick to respond, posting three runs in the bottom of the inning. LF Drew Clymer would grab one of the three runs of the inning off an RBI-single, while EH Orlando Pena and Clymer scored off the heels of two errors from SS=] Nathan Cannizaro.
The Lightning would add two more in the third, tacking on three singles, including two from Clymer and CF Michael Furry.
Through this, right-hander Jace Trautner would give Leesburg five solid innings on the mound, only allowing one run across in three hits. Trautner only allowed one hit across his first three innings and struck out four in his fourth start of the season.
The 4th would be the first scoreless inning of the game, while Leesburg grabbed another run in bottom of the 5th off an EH Orlando Pena single that scored in CF Michael Furry.
Coming off a delay, the Sins would try to inch back by grabbing a run in the top of the 6th, but a seven run inning in the bottom of the frame would catapult Leesburg to a 14-2 lead, backed by an Orlando Pena grand slam.
Nick Vieira would shut the door in the top of the 7th, mercy ruling the Suns for the team's first win over DeLand on the season.
"We dropped a few games and the teams really been looking to get back on track and I think we're on the right the right side of things to get the ball rolling again," said Pena.
The Lightning are off on Wednesday before returning back to action on Thursday, July 4th to take on the Winter Garden Squeeze. First Pitch is at 5 p.m.
