The Lightning fall to Suns in Series Opener, 9-7
(Leesburg, Fla.)- The Leesburg Lightning fell short to the DeLand Suns on Thursday night in the battle of two of the top teams in the FCSL, dropping the game 9-7.
The first four innings looked like a pitching-driven performance on the night, with Leesburg starter Ryland Bozenhard and DeLand starter Haro Baez both putting together excellent starts to the night. However, Bozenhard would drive into some trouble in the 5th, allowing two runs to score and putting the Suns up 2-0 in the middle of the game.
DeLand would go on to score seven more in the inning after Leesburg went to three pitchers, with Mason Hutsell grabbing the final out, giving DeLand the 9-run advantage.
The Lightning would battle back in the top of the 6th, grabbing 5 runs in the inning, including off a bases-clearing RBI single by Orlando Pena, in which he moved to third off of some defensive miscues by the Suns.
Mason Hutsell would propel the Lightning into the later frames of the ballgame, throwing in 2.1 innings of work and eating up innings for the team.
The Lightning would tack on two more in the 8th inning to draw within 2 to DeLand's lead, coming off of a wild pitch that allowed Michael Furry to score and a sacrifice groundball from Drew Clymer, allowing James Strom to come across.
In the top of the 9th, Leesburg would strike offensively, loading the bases and setting up a chance to overtake the Suns lead. However, Bryce Gluckman was able to grab the final two outs of the contest, ending the game on a flyball out left field that was close to dropping in.
In total, the Lightning had five multi-hit performances on the night and strung together eight of the 11 in the last five innings of the ball game.
The Lightning look to rebound after last night's game, welcoming in the DeLand Suns for the first and only home game of the series tonight at Pat Thomas Stadium. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
