The Lightning Drop Game 2 To The Suns, 11-7
(Leesburg, Fla.)-The Leesburg Lightning fell short in a eerily similar game from Thursday night, making strides late on what was a 9-1 lead at one point in the ball game against the DeLand Suns.
The Suns grabbed the early lead in the top half of the 1st off a RBI single from C Aris Riviera to give DeLand the early lead in the ballgame. However, Leesburg would settle with starting right-hander Jace Trautner on the mound keeping the Suns bats quite through the 4th inning and not allowing any runs across.
3B Orlando Pena would hit a sacrifice fly out to right, driving in SS Keeton Burroughs in the bottom of the 4th, but the Suns would post up 4 runs in the top of the 5th after Leesburg got within one off of Ryan Robinson's RBI-single and 3B Damion Kenealy's RBI-double that would catapult DeLand up, 6-1.
DeLand would tack on three more runs in the top half of the 6th, but Leesburg would respond in bottom of the inning off a sacrifice by RF Jordy Oriach, driving in Keeton Burroughs to inch back into the ball game.
The 7th and 8th innings looked to be the turning points of the ballgame for Leesburg. After a leadoff walk by CF Michael Furry, the Bolts tacked on three runs in the 7th, including coming off a RBI double by SS Keeton Burroughs. Furry and EH James Strom would both score in the 8th off a wild pitch and an error on a throw to second by the catcher Aris Riviera to drive across two runs, putting the Lightning down by 3 heading into the 9th.
But an extra run scored for DeLand gave them enough of a cushion to hold off Leesburg in the bottom of the 9th, even with Leesburg threating again with back-to-back singles by Ty Denton and Ryan Jenkins.
Keeton Burroughs put a stellar performance on the night, finishing 4-5 with a double and RBI and was a key sparkplug to the Lightning's late game run.
"Yeah, we've got some guys struggling like they've never struggled before," Coach Billings said. "So it's tough for some of these guys. But you know, we just go to get them to understand that they're going to show up today and a lot of them are going to be in the lineup again. We don't have a ton of guys and we're missing some guys right now. We got some injuries. And so, you know, we got too got to get through this with the guys. I fully expect that they'll show up and they'll be ready to ready to roll."
The Lightning are back in action this evening, closing out the final game of this weekend series against the Suns in DeLand at Melching Field, looking to try and split the week. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
