Lightning Take Down Undefeated Diamond Dawgs, 6-2
LEESBURG, Fla. - The Leesburg Lightning (3-1) maintained their perfect record at home on Thursday night, defeating the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs (4-1) by a score of 6-2. It was Winter Park’s first loss of the season.
Stetson Nelson (Winthrop) started for Leesburg and pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Anthony Figliolia (Rollins) started for Winter Park, going 3.1 innings. He gave up three hits and one unearned run, along with pitching up one strikeout and one walk.
The winning pitcher for the Lightning was Jonah Davis (Lake Sumter CC). The losing pitcher for Winter Park was Stephen Holden (Lake Sumter CC). Trey Norris (Polk State) picked up his second save of the season for Leesburg.
Leesburg took the lead for good on a three-run home run from catcher Mike Miller (Dallas Baptist) in the bottom of the seventh.
“I thought we played pretty well,” Lightning head coach David Therneau said after the game. “We got the timely hit in the two-out, three-run homer. That was the difference maker. Two-out RBI win ballgames, bottom line. That’s obviously the play of the game.”
Winter Park got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning. Second baseman Michael Danner (Tampa) doubled down the left-field line, advanced on a groundout and then scored on a wild pitch. Danner was 2-for-3 on the night.
The Lighting tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the fourth. Catcher Mike Miller (Dallas Baptist) reached on an error by the first baseman. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from first baseman Jason Matusik (Lynn) and then scored on an Erik Hindmon (Polk State) single to right-centerfield.
Leesburg extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Miller hit a 370-foot home run to straight-away left field. Matt Singletary (Polk State) and Chase Durham (Dallas Baptist) scored on the home run. Singletary reached on a single to center field. Durham, the batter immediately in front of Miller, reached because of an error from the shortstop on a play that would have been the third out of the inning.
The Diamond Dawgs cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth. Leadoff hitter Ted Blackman (Coastal Carolina) reached on a walk, worked his way around to third base after a ground out and an error by the left-fielder, and then scored on an throwing error by the first baseman trying to throw Blackman out at home.
The Lightning extended their lead in the bottom of the eighth when Durham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Jake Hanson (Flagler), then Jake Cavendar scored (Point) scored on wild pitch.
Leesburg is back on action on Friday night against the Sanford River Rats at Buddy Lowe Field at Pat Thomas Stadium. Game time is at 7 p.m. It is Magnet Schedule Night. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by former WWE wrestler and member of the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, Afa the Wild Samoan, as the Lightning announce Pro Wrestling Night at Pat Thomas Stadium, which will be on Friday, August 3.
