Lightning Walk Off Diamond Dawgs to Take 1-0 Series Lead
Leesburg, Fla. – The Leesburg Lightning are one win away from a spot in the FCSL Championship Series after rallying for a 6-5 walk off victory over the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in 11 innings Tuesday night at Pat Thomas Stadium, taking a 1-0 lead in the best of three semifinal series.
Winter Park struck first with an RBI single from Garrett Frost in the opening inning, but the Lightning answered immediately. Matthew Dumas reached base and eventually scored on a pair of Diamond Dawgs errors to tie the game at 1-1.
Leesburg moved ahead in the third when Andon Gray lined an RBI single to center, bringing home Dumas for a 2-1 lead. Winter Park answered in the fifth, scoring twice to regain the advantage before Charlie Keller tied the game again with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Diamond Dawgs took advantage of defensive miscues to score two unearned runs in the sixth, but Marcello Cortale answered with an RBI double to even the score at 4-4.
Trailing 5-4 in the ninth, the Lightning forced extra innings when Hayden Gustavson delivered a clutch RBI single that scored Preston Murphy.
Carson Henrikson kept Leesburg in the game with a dominant relief outing, allowing just one hit over five innings while striking out 10. Cody Clymer worked a scoreless 11th inning to earn the win.
In the bottom of the 11th, Dylan Green advanced to third on a fielder's choice before scoring the winning run when a throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, giving the Lightning a 6-5 walk-off victory.
The Lightning now lead the best of three semifinal series 1-0 and can punch their ticket to the FCSL Championship Series with a win in Game two on Wednesday night at Winter Park. Game two between the Lightning and Diamond Dawgs will be at Alfond Stadium at 6:00 PM.
