Lightning Snap Five Game Losing Streak Against Snappers
ORLANDO, Fla.-The Leesburg Lightning snapped their five-game losing streak Monday night, with a 7-6 win on the road over the Orlando Snappers.
Both teams were shutout through the first four innings, as it was a pitcher’s duel early on in the evening.
Ryan Brown (Valdosta State) got the start and was phenomenal on the mound for the Lightning, totalling 5 ? innings pitched and 7 strikeouts, while only giving up two runs and two walks on the night.
“I just go up there and try to pound the zone and throw strikes,” Brown said. “It doesn’t matter how many runs we have on the scoreboard, I like to keep a good tempo and get the team back in the dugout.”
Once the bullpens entered the mix for both teams, both offenses started to come alive.
The Lightning were able to capitalize on five errors from the Snappers, the first coming on a wild throw to second base on a Logan Chapman (Georgia Tech) steal attempt, which rolled past the center fielder and allowed Chapman to score to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.
Another error in the sixth, followed by a RBI single by Chapman, extended the Lightning lead to 3-0.
At this point, the game started to go back and forth, as both teams would trade runs going into the bottom of the ninth.
It was a familiar scene during this losing streaking, as the Lightning were at-risk of blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning, after blowing a three-run lead to Sanford last week. After already giving up two runs in the inning, Jayson Chaffee (Northwest Florida State) dug down deep and got the final strikeout to snap the losing streak and give Leesburg the win.
“Them knowing we almost had a repeat, but got out of it is progress,” Lightning Head Coach Rich Billings said. “We’ve just tried to keep it simple and take things one day at a time and it paid off tonight.”
The Lightning are now tied with the Snappers in the standings, with a chance to leapfrog them with a win in the series finale on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7 PM at Pat Thomas Stadium.
