Lightning Punch Ticket to Championship Series
Winter Park, Fla. – The Leesburg Lightning are headed to the Florida Collegiate Summer League Championship Series after defeating the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, 13-2, on Wednesday night in Game Two of the semifinal series.
Leesburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and continued to build its advantage throughout the night. The Lightning scored in the first, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, finishing with 13 runs on 13 hits.
Marcello Cortale led the way offensively, going four for four with a double, home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Andon Gray drove in four runs and added two hits, while Dylan Green went three for five with a double and an RBI. Daniel Despaine scored three runs, collected two hits and drove in a run.
The Lightning put the game out of reach with a five-run ninth inning. Dylan Green started the scoring with an RBI double before Despaine added an RBI single. Cortale followed with a two run double, and Gray capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to give Leesburg a 13-2 lead.
On the mound, Bryce Gluckman delivered a dominant start, throwing seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out seven. Miguel Figueroa and Cole Jones each added an inning in relief.
It has been a phenomenal run for the Lightning this summer as they now sit just two wins away from their sixth title in franchise history. The Sanford River Rats are the final team standing in their path as they closed out their series against the Winter Garden Squeeze after stealing Game One on the road at Horizon Park and winning a thrilling Game Two in walk off fashion at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
Game One of the FCSL Championship series between Leesburg and Sanford will take place on Saturday, July 25th at 7:00 PM at Pat Thomas Stadium.
