Lightning Force Winner Take All Game Three with 13-8 Victory Over River Rats
Sanford, Fla. – Facing elimination, the Leesburg Lightning responded with their backs against the wall defeated the Sanford River Rats 13-8 on Sunday night to even the Florida Collegiate Summer League Championship Series at one game apiece.
The Lightning wasted no time grabbing the lead. Matthew Dumas scored the game's first run in the opening inning after Charlie Keller reached on a dropped fly ball that was ruled a sacrifice fly. Preston Murphy followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0, and another RBI groundout by Murphy in the third extended the advantage to 3-0.
Leesburg added another run in the fourth when Jack Waddingham singled home Dylan Green to build a 4-0 lead before Sanford answered with a six-run bottom half. The River Rats capitalized on a defensive error and a wild pitch before AJ Seymour's two-run home run capped the inning, giving Sanford the lead 6-4.
Rather than letting the game slip away, the Lightning answered immediately. Marcello Cortale delivered an RBI single in the fifth before Dylan Green tied the game with an RBI double later in the inning.
The offense took over from there. In the sixth, Andon Gray lined a two-run single to put Leesburg back in front before Charlie Keller launched a two-run home run to left field, stretching the lead to 10-6. The Lightning added three more runs in the seventh as Cory Banasiak drove in a run with a double before Waddingham capped the inning with a two-run double to make it 13-6.
Sanford scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Miguel Figueroa closed out the final two innings without allowing a run to secure the victory.
Leesburg finished with 12 hits and drew nine walks, with every starter reaching base at least once. Andon Gray led the offense by going three for five with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Waddingham finished two for three with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Keller drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer, while Murphy added two RBIs. Dumas scored three times and stole three bases atop the lineup.
Carson Henrikson earned the win in relief to improve to 5-0 despite allowing five runs over four innings, while Figueroa struck out three over the final two scoreless innings to earn the save.
With the victory, the Lightning force a winner take all Game Three on Monday night at Pat Thomas Stadium. The Florida Collegiate Summer League championship will be decided with one final game on Monday, July 27th at 7:00 PM.
