Lightning Flip the Script in Wild Win Over Orlando
Orlando, Fla. – The Leesburg Lightning erased a six-run first inning deficit and scored the game's final three runs to defeat the Orlando Snappers 9-8 on Friday night, improving to 24-10 with one game remaining in the regular season.
Orlando jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening inning. Roy Rodriguez broke the game open with a grand slam before James Hankerson Jr. followed with a solo home run, putting the Lightning in an early hole.
Leesburg answered immediately with a six-run second inning. After Preston Murphy's RBI double got the Lightning on the board, Andon Gray and Ledger Pleasant each drew bases loaded walks to cut into the deficit. A wild pitch brought home another run before Matthew Dumas lined an RBI single to center. Charlie Keller then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, capping the rally and tying the game at 6-6.
The Lightning took their first lead in the third when Jack Waddingham launched a two-run home run to right center for his first homer of the season, scoring Hayden Gustavson and giving Leesburg an 8-6 advantage.
The Snappers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Danny Garcia and Rodriguez, tying the game at 8-8.
After both teams were held scoreless for four straight innings, Leesburg broke through in the eighth. Waddingham drew a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position before coming home on a wild pitch, giving the Lightning a 9-8 lead.
The bullpen made the lead stand. Ben Clenney worked a scoreless fourth inning before Miguel Figueroa settled the game with three shutout innings to earn his third win of the season. Cody Clymer closed out the final two innings without allowing a run, striking out three to collect his second save.
Despite managing only four hits, the Lightning capitalized on 13 walks and three wild pitches to complete the comeback. Waddingham drove in two with his home run and scored three times, Dumas finished with two hits and an RBI, while Murphy, Gray, Pleasant, and Keller each added an RBI.
Leesburg will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, July 18th, when it hosts the Orlando Snappers at Pat Thomas Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM as the Lightning look to close out the regular season and head into the playoffs on a high note.
