Leesburg Blown out by Snappers in Home Return
LEESBURG, Fla - Another devastating loss for the Leesburg Lightning on Tuesday night as they dropped a 10-2 contest in seven innings to the Seminole County Snappers at Pat Thomas Stadium - Buddy Lowe Field. This is the second time the Lightning have been run-ruled in the past three games.
A fantastic start from Lightning left-hander Brandon Haston (Georgia St) gave Leesburg a fighting chance in the first few innings. Haston chucked three frames, allowing just two hits on no runs while striking out a pair.
After three scoreless innings, Seminole County struck first with a three-run homer from outfielder Nelson Taylor (Polk St) in the fourth inning. The second home run in the past two games for Taylor. One more run in the inning would make it 4-0 Snappers.
Lightning reliever Casey Daiss (Pasco Hernando St) was charged with the loss as he threw the fourth inning, allowing the deciding four runs on four hits. Next to pitch was freshman right-hander Bryson Galloway (North Carolina A&T) in the fifth as he would exit the game after being unable to record an out, giving up two runs on two hits.
Junior left-hander Cameron Sereda entered the ballgame and kept Seminole County from scoring anymore in the top of the fifth.
The Bolts would grab a run in the bottom half of the inning as outfielder Marco Dinges (Tallahassee CC) hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Austin Brinling (Daytona St).
The Snappers wasted no time in extending the lead as they picked up two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth with a grand-slam off the bat Zach Weaver (Mars Hill). Seminole County led 10-1 after six innings of play.
Sereda was roughed up for the first time in a Lightning uniform as he also tossed the sixth inning, allowing four runs on four hits. The final arm for Leesburg was freshman righty Justin Gay (Pasco Hernando St), striking out two in his one inning of scoreless baseball.
With two outs in the ninth, Lightning catcher Travis Stapleton (Polk St) grabbed his second hit of the game with an RBI double off the left field wall to score Ian Thornton (Lake Sumter) from first. Stapleton accounted for two of the three Leesburg hits on the night.
That would be the end of the Lightning rally as Seminole County closed out the ballgame, winning by an eight-run mercy rule, 10-2.
Leesburg has lost four of its last five games and will take Wednesday off to regroup and come back for a three-game set against the Deland Suns, starting on Thursday night. There is a big opportunity to get back on track for the Lightning as Deland is 0-7 to start the year. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at The Villages.
