Late inning heartbreaker pushes Altamonte over Bolts
Top notch defense and working bats ended in a heartbreaker for the Leesburg Lightning (19-19-1) as the fell on a walk-off home run to the Altamonte Springs Scorpions (19-17-1) on Saturday night at Conrad Park.
The Scorpions took the lead on a sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Leesburg responded in the top of the fifth thanks to a fielder’s choice on Tucker Rayburn to tie it up 1-1.
Tyler Parry dealt six innings from the bump with six hits, two runs and three strikeouts. A throwing error in the top of the sixth plated Mick Tinny for a Lightning lead but Altamonte quickly responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning for a 2-2 ballgame.
Josh Wilson relieved Parry in the top of the seventh for an inning’s work with two hits, no runs and a strikeout.
Big hits started off each inning but ultimately double plays and missed contact doomed the Lightning, stranding
Daniel Pierce closed the game with two innings, one hit, one run and three strikeouts.
The contest saw an inning of free baseball but Altamonte sealed the deal with a walk-off home run for a 3-2 final.
Leesburg returns to Pat Thomas for their final home game of the season on Sunday, July 30, with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
