Lightning Welcome the U.S. Military All-Stars to Leesburg

LEESBURG, Fla. - On a perfect night for baseball on Saturday night, the Leesburg Lightning hosted the U.S. Military All-Stars at Pat Thomas Stadium, coming out on top by a final score of 10-3. The Lightning and the locals of Leesburg turned out and saluted the team of All-Stars, comprised of fine brave men who dedicate their lives to protecting our country.

Following pre-game ceremonies, the Lightning got their first glimpse of the U.S. Military All-Stars knuckleballer, Zach Staniewicz. The first five batters in the first reached for Leesburg, with Clay Simmons (South Florida) and Clay Simmons (Thomas Univ.) contributing RBIs.

After jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, the Lightning responded with three more in the third as they increased their lead to 7-0.

It was an all-around affair for Leesburg in the game as each player contributed in their own individual way. Eight pitchers in total accounted for just two runs allowed on five hits.

Clay Simmons (Thomas Univ.) and Long led the way for the Lightning, both finishing with three hits on the night.

Clay Simmons and Clay Simmons (South Florida) recorded two hits each for Leesburg as well.

Christopher Collins and Daniel Vargas each finished 2-for-5 with an RBI for the U.S. Military All-Stars.

The Lightning organization paid their final tributes to the U.S. Military All-Stars at 9:11 p.m. as everyone at Pat Thomas Stadium rose to their feet and sang God Bless America, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and everyone who continues to serve our country.

Leesburg returns to action on Monday night as they play host to the Winter Garden Squeeze. First pitch from Pat Thomas Stadium is slated for 6 p.m.
