Lightning Fall at Winter Park, 13-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The Leesburg Lightning (12-17) returned to The First Academy in Orlando on Saturday night to face the team with the best record in the Florida League, the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs (26-3). The Lightning were run-ruled in eight innings.

The Lightning found themselves in an early hole for the second straight game, as the Dawgs got a two-run single from Luke Reidy (Rollins) that gave the league’s top team an early 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, the Diamond Dawgs loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, putting three ducks on the pond for Cam Meehan (Rollins). Meehan crushed a ball over the left-center field wall for a grand slam that made it a 6-0 game in the early going.

In the fourth, the Dawgs went on a tear. Winter Park got three home runs, two solo shots from Adarius Myers (Louisiana Tech) Meehan, his second of the game, and a two-run blast from Luis Cabrera (Southeastern). After four, the Diamond Dawgs led 10-0.

The 10-0 score held until the seventh, where up to that point the Lightning had not had a baserunner. They got one in the top of the seventh, as Robbie Scott (North Florida) drew a leadoff walk. Scott ended up scoring on a throwing error before a Cage Cox (Valdosta State) solo homer, his sixth of the season, made it a 10-2 game. The two runs from the Lightning delayed the mercy rule for an inning.

The Lightning scored a run in the ninth on yet another throwing error, closing the deficit to 10-3.

The Dawgs racked up three runs in the bottom of the eight to complete the run-rule victory, with a final score of 13-3.

The Lightning recorded just two hits in the contest, Cox’s homer and a Jarrett Backus (King College) single. Both hits came from the seventh inning on, as the Winter Park pitching staff had a perfect game working through six innings.

The Lightning will play its final game of the series against the Diamond Dawgs in a rare Sunday game on July 15. First pitch will be at noon.
