Lightning Down the Dawgs for the Second Time
DeLand, FL – Unlike the first match-up between these two teams the game would not end in walk-off fashion but would still end in a Lightning (8-2) victory. Leesburg remains on top of the Florida League standing to defeat the Diamond Dawgs (4-5) five runs to two.
The game started looking like a pitcher's duel with both Lightning’s Tyler Tipton (FGCU) and Reese Brown (Seminole State) getting the first three batters of each teams’ lineup out in the first inning. The second inning was similar. Brown allowed a base runner due to an error but then got the next three hitters out including a strikeout. Tipton once again faced three Dawgs’ players and sat down all three. Both teams scored their first runs in the third.
Leesburg stuck first. Almost turning out with the same outcome as the last two innings, the Lightning had two outs in just as many batters. Then Camden Traficante (Stetson) doubles getting the first base hit for either team. Traficante later put the Lightning ahead early once Tommy Seidl’s (Harvard) pop up to right field was dropped by a Dawgs’ infielder. The threat ended there as the next batter stuck out swinging. Winter Park also saw themselves cross home plate in the third. Lead-off batter Jake Garella (St. Louis) singled and Ryan Hernandez (St. Louis) walked to put two runners on the base paths. Next up, Khalib Bayona (Tampa) drills an RBI double scoring Garella from second. Hernandez also came around putting the Dawgs ahead of the Lightning when Carson Clowers (Shelton State CC) strikes a pitch to the right-field gap for a triple. Winter Park only held the lead for one inning and would never score again. The reason, Leesburg’s Matthew Coles (Carson-Newman) earning the win went four innings giving up one hit and striking out three.
On to the fifth, Leesburg’s Gabriel Rincones (St. Petersburg) singles to begin the inning however called out the next pitch with a double-play ball. Despite two outs on the board, the Lightning tied the game at two apiece. The following three Lightning players walked then Jalen DeBose (FAU) scored the tying run when Seidl was hit with a pitch. Leesburg held scoreless until the eighth inning by Dawgs’ pitcher Carlos Lequerica (Bethune-Cookman) who worked 2.1 innings allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
The game decided in the eighth kicked off with a Seidl walk and stolen base. Tate Stone-Frisina (Rollins) steps into the inning with Seidl on second and one out. Clay Stearns (Troy) brought home Seidl hitting an RBI single on Stone-Frisina’s second pitch. Stone-Frisina settled down and got the final two outs on another 6-4-3 double play made by the defense. That run was ultimately the decider, but the Lightning would tack on two more in the ninth to pad the lead. One of those two runs came off the bat of Gabriel RIncones who blasted a solo shot over the left-field wall for his third home run of the season.
The Diamond Dawgs gave themselves a chance in the bottom of the ninth. Three of the first four batters at the top of their lineup walked to load the bases with just one out. Cole Beeker (George Washington) contacted the ball however it, unfortunately, hit Tyler Robertson (Louisiana Lafayette) recording the second out. A line out to left field ended the rally for Winter Park. Tucker Smith (Georgia Southwestern) in his first appearance with the Lightning earned the save.
