Lightning Drop Game One Of Doubleheader

Lightning Drop Game One Of Doubleheader

DELAND, Fla. -- The Leesburg Lightning (2-4) travelled to face the DeLand Suns (5-2) to play a two-game set as part of a makeup for Thursday’s washout. Game one began at 4:00 and game two got started at 6:20.

Game One

The DeLand Suns sent Daniel Paret (Stetson) to his home mound for game one, a seven inning contest, of the doubleheader. Paret twirled a gem for the Suns, as he limited the Lightning to one run on two hits in six innings of work.

The Suns got on the board in the bottom of the first, on a Mark Townsend (Stetson) RBI triple which was followed by a run scoring fielder’s choice. The Suns led 2-0 after one.

Leesburg starting pitcher Jeremiah Foster (North Carolina A&T) buckled down after the first and recorded three straight scoreless frames that kept the game in reach for the Lightning.

The Lightning’s only run came in the top of the fifth, when centerfielder Mike Rocco (Ohio Northern) drove in Sean Mootrey (Georgia Gwinnett) with a single.

The Suns responded, as they did the majority of their damage in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second with no outs, Townsend came through again as he delivered a two-RBI double and then advanced to third on an error. The Suns added two more via an RBI groundout and an RBI base on balls.

The Lightning went quietly in the sixth and seventh innings. The Suns took game one by a score of 6-1.

Game Two

The Leesburg Lightning (2-4) and DeLand Suns (4-2) played 1.1 innings before an 82 minute lightning delay. The game resumed at 8:00.

There was an attempt to continue the game after the delay, but another storm moved in and the game was suspended.

The score was tied 1-1 after two innings.

It will be resumed at a later date.
