Too Many Mistakes Doom Lightning as They Fall to DeLand, 10-1

Leesburg, FL – Six walks and six hit batters were too much for the Leesburg Lightning (23-8) to overcome as they turned in one of their worst games of the season in a 10-1 loss to the DeLand Suns (17-14). The Lightning are closing on clinching the top spot in the Florida League playoffs with only 10 regular season games remaining this summer, but they’ll have to wait at least two more games to do so after turning in a disappointing performance against the Suns on Wednesday night.

The Suns took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after Alan Alonso (Lake Sumter State), Wade Stauss (Southeast Missouri State) and Nick DeTringo (Tampa) all reached base without recording a hit. Florida League All-Star Scout McFalls (Winthrop) drove in Alonso and Stauss with a single to right field, but a leaping grab by shortstop Jay Prather (North Florida) saved the Lightning from falling deeper into a hole early in the game.

DeLand added three more runs in the top of the fourth on a similar situation. Wade Stauss reached on an error and DeTringo drew his second walk of the game to put runners on first and second with two outs. The next batter up, Matthew Mulkey (Winthrop), sent a high fly ball over the left field fence that left little doubt as to whether or not it was a home run as soon as he hit it. The three-run bomb put the Suns up 5-0 and the Lightning in an unfamiliar situation, trailing by five runs.

Leesburg got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a solo home run by returning designated hitter Tanner May (North Florida). May was returning from a calf injury that forced him to sit out for just over a week, but an infield single in his first time at bat and the long ball the second time proved that rust would not be an issue for the league RBI leader.

Lightning head coach Rich Billings was happy to see May return without any rust, as that was one of the small bright spots for Leesburg in the game. “It’s definitely nice to have him back in the lineup. We still have some guys banged up and we’re still missing a few pieces but it was really nice to see Tanner come back and have some success and continue his hot streak,” explained Billings. “It was nice to see him square a couple balls up and hopefully we can get him back out in the field pretty soon.”

DeLand added a sac fly run in the sixth, two runs on a Scout McFalls RBI single in the seventh and another run in the eighth on a fielder’s choice that turned into a Jay Prather throwing error to go up 9-1 heading into the ninth.

Leesburg couldn’t muster a hit in the last three innings and fell to the Suns 10-1. After the game, coach Billings said that while he was disappointed with his team’s effort, he knows that they can rebound quickly. “Sometimes it’s good for stuff like this to happen, you get knocked down every once in a while. Those guys (DeLand) were just flat out better than us tonight,” Billings said. “Tonight, we certainly weren’t the better team. They outplayed us in every facet of the game, they outpitched us, they played better defense, they outhit us, they were just better than us.”

The Lightning will face DeLand again on Thursday and Friday this week. Both games will take place in DeLand, and both will start at 7:00 p.m.
