Scanlon Named Florida League MVP

Harrison Scanlon of the Leesburg Lightning has been named by the Florida League board, coaches and staff as the Movst Valuable Player for the 2016 summer season.

Scanlon is a rising senior first baseman from Western Kentucky University. After a decent start to the season that saw Scanlon make the North All-Star team, he abolsutely caught fire at the plate to close out the year. In the 16 games after the All-Star break, Scanlon was 27-64 (.421 average) with three doubles, four home runs, 14 runs scored and 20 RBI. During that stretch, the Lightning went 9-7 and pulled themselves out of last place in the standings and into the playoff race, finishing fourth.

For the season, Scanlon's numbers read: 43 games, .381 average, 27 runs, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 38 RBI. His 89 total bases set a new Florida League single season record, breaking the mark of 81 previously held by Mark Nelson and Michael Danner in 2012. His 59 hits were the second most in league history, and his 38 RBI were third most.

The offensive highlight of the year ... not just for Scanlon, but for the entire league ... came during a doubleheader on July 25th against Winter Park. In game one of the double dip, Scanlon went 3-4 at the plate, stroking a double, two homeruns and driving in seven. He then capped the day off with a 2-5 performance in game two, with another longball and five more RBI. The 12 RBI in one day is a Florida League record. Most importantly, the Lightning won both games in the middle of a playoff push.
